Ah winter. When the temperature gets to below zero and the wind is blowing, its hard to find the joy in winter. I loved those winters when our kids were little. The temperatures were milder and the snow would get so deep that they could play in it. They sure had fun digging tunnels and making snowmen and snow giants.
There are somethings I like about winter. Even though it is a mess to drive in, snow is beautiful. It's pretty when the snow falls and the land looks so clean and beautiful with it's white blanket. I love hot drinks soups, and the fireplace.
As the season drags on we soon get tired of the cold and the mess. When Spring finally arrives it feels like a gift.
I think it is easy to get the winter blues because we are always longing for something better, for something more comfortable. When summer gets here, we long for cooler temperatures. Why is it so hard to be content? Why can't we just live for today and find the good in it. In the future we will look back and wonder where those days went and wish that we had them back. Being content is a decision that I have to make everyday. It is like a decision to love somebody. It is a choice to care for another individual that in turn brings me joy. Being discontented has the opposite effect. I make myself miserable and I negatively impact the people around me.
Since I began reading the Bible and praying on a regular basis, I found that it is easier to be happy and content. There is a wonderful peace that comes over me that makes all these things seem ok.
Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.
I have always questioned the word fear in such passages. One definition is: to feel reverence or awe for.
We make decisions every day. Some decisions enrich our lives and some diminish it but the choice is ours to make.
May this year be a new start to a wonderful future.
Who is Sally? I have been very happily married for 31 years and we have four grown children and 7 grandchildren.
