I enjoy the shows where they take something old and dirty, clean it up, refurbish it, reinvent it, and make something amazing. I have reclaimed many items myself over the years. Sometimes things are in good shape, like the lamp in the picture. This lamp only needed a makeover. It was black and I needed an oiled rubbed bronze color lamp. I spray painted it and rubbed just a hint of copper paint on it in various places and bought a new lamp shade. Within a few hours, I had a really nice lamp that fit into my decorating scheme.
It’s rewarding to refurbish and reinvent things. There is satisfaction in reclaiming something useful instead of sending it to the landfill. Most of the time, these items can be made into something beautiful. In order for the transformation to take place, a few things have to happen. 1. We have to recognize the value of the item. 2. We have to envision the potential. 3. We have to be willing to put in the time and effort it takes to transform the object.
I think sometimes our life can be like those objects; in need of a transformation. Years can go by and we find ourselves in a rut. We look at our existence and find that it’s not what we want. I have had both a spiritual drought and a physical crisis where I needed to stop, evaluate and begin to do things differently. No one else could do it for me. It was my mind and my body, therefore, I had to do it myself.
During my spiritual drought, I began using the S.O.A.P. method of studying the Bible. Yes, it took a little time each day but the rewards were beyond anything I could imagine. I have to say, to be spiritually alive and have a close relationship with the Lord on a daily basis in phenomenal. The result of that decision is my book, Soap How To Clean Up Your Stinking Thinking One Day At A Time and this website. I had no way of knowing where the decision to get into the Bible and spend time with God would take me. What a wonderful experience.
My second issue was my health. I had doctors tell me they didn’t know what else to do with me. At that point, I knew I had to make a choice; put up with the issues or do something about them. Like most people, I put up with the issues for several years until I could no longer. I believe God heals but I also know I needed to do my part. I began to get away from foods that were harmful and started to eat natural food, nothing processed. I got off sugars and most grain and dairy. I found out what other foods were bothering me and eliminated them. I began to eat and drink 100% healthy. Yes, it was hard but most things worthwhile are. After a while, it got easier and easier but I had to hang in there and keep working until it did. Since January of 2014 I have dropped 40 lbs. and improved my health tremendously. By eating healthy food, my body is healing and getting stronger.
It’s amazing that when I began to let go and let God, my life got so much better. To sum up the process of recycling my life, I go back to those three steps with scripture.
First I had to recognize that I am of great worth. 1 Peter 3:4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
Second I had to envision my possibilities by standing on God’s promise. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. If I could not find the strength from somewhere, then I would not be able to believe in the possibility of a better life.
Third, I had to be willing to do the hard work and change the way I was thinking in order to obtain a better life for myself. Hard work resulted in change, but all the years of talk got me nowhere. Proverbs 14:23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. Prayer and staying in the Bible gave me great strength.
Whether starting to read the Bible, working on your health, or something else that you need to tackle, it will always start out hard because you have to die to your own stubborn will first. Little by little it will get easier and then you will begin to see the change. The key to success is to allow God to help and guide you. There is great power in combining your life with the Lords.
Isaiah 40:31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
I hope you decide to recycle, refurbish, or reinvent. It’s a great thing to rescue something from destruction.
Enjoy the journey!
