Have you ever been really thirsty? I remember playing in a softball tournament in the summer when it was around 90 degrees and being so thirsty I thought I was going to drop. At that point, the ball game, what people said or did, the future, the past, nothing was more important than getting a glass of water.
Now, some 45 years later, I get weak and start to feel bad and I know that I am in need of water. I know that I am becoming dehydrated.
I don’t always feel the thirst like I use to, and this is the way my body responds. Yes, I have been tested for things and I am ok, it’s just the way my body gives me a sign of what it needs. When I go and get a few glasses of water, very soon I feel fine again. I usually don’t leave home without water. Other drinks make me feel worse, it’s only water that satisfies and provides what I need.
When we think about thirst, we can begin to relate it to a thirst of another kind. Many times we struggle and try to quench that thirst with everything imaginable but we are still thirsty for something. What is missing, we may ask, “why can’t I be happy?” “Look at all I have accomplished!” “Look at all I have!” ”Look at all my family and friends!” “The holidays have come and gone and I am empty!” “I need something and I don’t know what?”
I believe it is similar to my thirst condition, feeling weak and depleted and the answer was not obvious to me for quite some time. All along it was water. Vitamins didn’t help, food didn’t help-only water did the trick and made my existence pleasant and enjoyable again. Yes I heard and read that I should be drinking several glasses of water a day, just as many of us have heard the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and thought, yea I know, maybe someday, or that isn’t true.
Why wait for a complete state of dehydration and death to find living water for our souls. Why keep pushing through, in an unhappy, unfulfilled state, struggling, feeling bad, unable to let go of things that ruin our lives, when the Lord of Lords wants to start a new year and a new life with us. Some things are hard to comprehend, some things do not make sense to our limited minds and stubborn bodies, but sometimes we have to drink the water and sometimes we need to pick up a Bible, read and pray. It all begins with overcoming stubbornness and letting go of what’s keeping us from the existence we were created for. Many of these things we can’t let go of without the help of the Lord.
A personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ will satisfy you and give you strength, peace and love. It is what you were created for. You have felt the symptoms, now go to Him in prayer and ask Him for His living water and begin to drink.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
Answer: In prayer. “Lord Help, come into my life and forgive my sins and be my Lord and Savior. I want to be yours and have your living water. I want to have the life you always wanted me to have. I want to start a new with you, In Jesus name, Amen”
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
If you prayed that prayer and decided to devote your life to the creator of the universe then you will be having a Happy New Year. Yes problems may come and go, but you will have God on your side and His peace in your heart to give you hope and eternal life.
