When I was a little girl, I remember my parents holding my hand when we went places. One memory is pretty unforgettable because I got lost for a short period of time. Mom had taken me to the grocery store and as she was picking up things and concentrating on what she was doing, she let go of my hand and I wandered off. Well, a few isles over there was a lady who must of had similar clothes as my mother, so I reached up and grabbed her hand thinking it was my mom, only to find out it was not. Yikes!
When we were children, we learned to live by trust. We put our trust in the people taking care of us. We knew they would feed us, take our hand and keep us safe. Then at home, we would go on about our little lives playing and sleeping without fear. Or at least that is the way God meant it to be. I understand not all children have had that kind of life and it breaks my heart.
As we became adults, we no longer relied on our parents and we began to trust mostly in ourselves. I could probably write many blogs on how that worked out for some of us.
2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
What does it mean to walk by faith? It means to trust God just like we trusted our parents. Many people struggle with that because they cannot see God like they can see a human being. Or maybe it’s hard for them to trust God because they have never been able to trust anyone. Walking by faith, not by sight means we should not depend on what we see to always be the truth. We will soon find out that it is not wise to base our important decisions on our limited human wisdom and perception alone.
To walk by faith also means we need more than a head knowledge of God, we have to have a relationship with the Lord Jesus and His Holy Spirit. Nothing about this Bible verse will begin to make sense to a person until they do.
A Faith walk is where a person daily decides to believe and trust in God. Without that guiding hand of the Father, we may find ourselves very lost and reaching for some other.
I love the song Defender by Francesca Battistelli a verse in the song says:
When I thought I lost me
You knew where I left me
You reintroduced me to Your love
You picked up all my pieces
Put me back together
You are the defender of my heart
Don’t we all need a defender like a loving parent? I can’t count all the times my parents picked me up mentally and physically and put me back together. Neither can I count how many times over the years God guided and worked through tough situations for my good.
Years of experience has taught me that the very best thing a person can do for themselves, is to take that faith walk with God and with each other.
Prayer
Lord, it’s pretty dark out there! May we walk in faith and not fear. Hold us up Lord and pave the road before us. Be our defender and find us when we lose our way. May we walk out our lives trusting and leaning on you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
God Bless
Sally
