A Time for Every Purpose Under Heaven

Music is enjoyable and powerful.  Music with lyrics easily conveys a message.  How many times in life do we replay lyrics and melodies of a song in our head. I remember one job I had, many of us would say, “I heard this song and I can’t get it out of my head.”  So, for fun we would email the words to some silly song to each other to get yet another song stuck in our head.  Oh, maybe you just had to be there, but it was a fun and harmless little prank we played on each other.

I wonder how many of you reading this blog remember the song, Turn, Turn, Turn? Subtitle, To Everything There Is a Season, made popular by the group, The Byrds.  It hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 December 4, 1965.  Did you know that most of the words came from KJV of the Bible in the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.  How awesome.  The passage and the song tell us that there is a time and a season for everything.   Read the scripture then go online and listen to the song, it’s quite beautiful.

I believe that every season of our lives has a purpose.  It’s up to each of us to figure out what that purpose is.   It is also up to us to decide whether we waste those seasons or we pray for understanding and live them with meaning and resolve.

Some seasons are fun and exciting especially when we are young, but then there are seasons of illness or death of loved ones that are really hard.  But what we are really talking about is, time, how we view it, use it and gain from it.

There are so many ways we use the word time in a sentence but one of the most popular is, time flies.  When I hear the expression, time flies, I think, “It went by so fast and I wasted so much of it, I wish I would have ______.”  You fill in the blank, I know most of you have thought the same thing.

How can we keep from wasting time? Now I’m not saying we have to be doing something every minute, no not at all, we need rest.  I know I waste time in front of the TV.  I need to limit myself.  What else can we do?

I think we need to ask questions like: “Lord, what would you have me to do today?”  “Lord, how can I glorify you today?”  “What can I do today that will benefit my family and my future, Lord?” After praying this, keep a note pad and pen handy or use your phone notes, when ideas pop into your head put them down.

This is how I get blog and writing ideas and how I get a hint to call or go see someone, send a card or stop and pray.  Often, I get ideas about things that I can do to benefit my family, my health etc.  Often, I get many fun and creative ideas as well.  God is so good!

Turn, turn, turn as in the song means to physically move in another direction.  It is an action word, a verb meaning to DO something!  In order to live a life with purpose, we need to DO something.  If we don’t ask the Lord to advise us, we may not be viewing, using or gaining from our seasons those things that the Lord has for us.  We may not grow or reach our full potential.  On our own, we may waste or just burn our time. When this happens, years go by and we look back with many regrets.

What does time mean to you?  How do you view life and all its seasons?  Under Heaven there is a time for every purpose.  Under our Creator’s love and presence there is a plan and a purpose for each of us.  We need to get up and move, change directions and find out what it is.  Live life to its fullest, be thankful for the good seasons and pray through the hard.  Begin to live in the presence of the Lord daily, and watch what happens.

Prayer

Lord, you are so good to me.  Even though there have been some hard situations I have lived through, there have been many, many more wonderful times.  As I look back I can see your hand working in my life.  I thank you Lord that you gave me the ability and desire to look to you for understanding.  Lord you made me a student of the life and set me on a course I would have never dreamed of.  May we all view our seasons from Heaven’s perspective and take every opportunity to use our time the best way we can. Lord, my regrets have been like sour grapes in my mouth, but with your help and example I am able to let go of them and move on.  Thank you, Lord, my father, and my friend.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

God Bless

Sally
