Is Your Foundation Solid or Precarious

You could say that I know something about structures and foundations.  See I owned a house that was built in 1873.  The thing about old buildings, is that over time without proper care, the foundations go bad and the structure can collapse.

There are quite a few shows on television that take old houses and make them new again? Well, that’s basically what we tried to do with this old building.  Mostly we flipped it because it was very affordable and also because at the time, we were young, ambitious and probably stupid, LOL.  Yes, there was a lot of work put into it and from the outside and even in the living area it looked pretty nice, but we were never able to properly fix the foundation.  Therefore, over time our old house continued to have problems.  Then unbeknownst to us, our roof acquired some damage from a hail storm which caused some water leaks.  After a time, we discovered we had a moisture problem behind the dry wall and mold took over causing me to get pretty sick.  We ended up tearing down the house because the money to do the mold remediation cost far more than this old house with foundation problems was worth anymore. Hey we lived in it over 30 years, so we probably got our money’s worth.  Although, we were not able to receive any monetary gain, only loss on our investment. Strong foundations and regular maintenance are key to a successful outcome for sure.

With buildings or our lives, we need a good foundation.  When people talk about having a strong foundation they are usually talking about education or wealth.  I don’t hear too much about spiritual foundations any more.  Does this mean it is not needed?  I don’t think so, I just think some people don’t take their spiritual lives very seriously these days. Their lives are precarious – not securely held in place but dependent on chance with an uncertain future.

Matthew 7:24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

 A solid biblical foundation becomes the basis of decision making and character building.  When we know what we believe and who we are devoted to, then we can build our life and all its decisions from that strong stable starting point.  As the years go by and we stay committed to maintaining this spiritual foundation and structure, we mature and grow and it becomes even stronger.

Matthew 5:37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

We must be firm in our minds about who we are.  Let us mean Yes when you say it and use it for good, not bad.  Let us firmly say No to evil, bad choices, over-commitments and destructive things. We can’t allow ourselves to be tossed about by a wishy-washy mind that is not tethered to any foundation of truth or love.  It is imperative to be steadfast and immovable in our faith and devotion to Jesus Christ for the life and future we desire for ourselves and our families.

Prayer

Lord, the words of your Holy Scripture speak life to us.  They are just as relative today as they were 2000 years ago.  Help us desire your presence and your word.  Open our hearts to receive your love and direction.  Give us discernment as we walk through this precarious life.  May we find peace and fulfillment in you.  Help us with our decisions and our attitudes.   We lift up thankful hearts to you, Lord.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
