Do you remember the old song, Shake, Rattle and Roll? Maybe some of you may not. Bill Haley and His Comets made it famous in 1954. There’s a neat message in it as well as a story.
I don’t always pick the subject of my blogs, most of the time I pray and ask the Lord what I should write about and a lot of times I get a title, maybe right away but most often when I’m doing something else. So, this week a while after I prayed, the words Shake-Rattle and Roll came clear as a bell into my mind. I was not listening to music or even thinking about music. I was doing some things around the house without even the television on. I thought, “wow where is this taking me?”
In the song, you come to understand that this is a married couple, for he wants her to fix him breakfast. She is a very attractive woman because he can’t stop looking at her. She likes to dress up and fix her hair just so, but her heart is cold as ice, and she spends his money as fast as he makes it. I love songs that tell a story!
The two lines that really got the message across are: Your heart is cold as ice, and you never do nothin to save your doggone soul. Wow! Isn’t that where so many people are today? They want to look great, have a great car and house and ignore or care less about their soul or their demeanor?
Shake, Rattle and Roll reminds me of what happened when Jesus died and rose again. Matthew 27:50-53 NIV And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
Well, the earth shook, the dry bones rattled and some came to life with Christ and the stone on Christ’s tomb was rolled away. What does this mean for us? To me this is saying several things. 1. God is all powerful able to shake and wake up anything He chooses. 2. Even dry spiritual bones (people) can come into a full rich life in Christ. 3. Nothing is impossible, God will leave the 99 to find the one. He will roll away boulders to set us free. 4. In the song the guy just wants the woman to move into positive action, instead of away from him. Isn’t that what Christ wants for us every day?
Maybe the Lord needs to shake our bones and rattle our teeth in order to roll us out of our stupor? When it’s all said and done, I believe that’s just what’s going to happen. Jesus’ death and resurrection was a major supernatural event like none other, and I believe His return will be quite a spectacular event as well, we’d better be ready. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 & Matthew 24:29-30.
Shake, Rattle and Roll is a fun upbeat song. I know the Lord loves laughter and fun because he put that into us. Let’s be joyful, fun believers that enjoy the God given talent of music. Even other genres have some pretty good messages for life once in a while.
Hey I hope you enjoy this song. Let us dance for the Lord giving Him praise for His love and grace as well as the wonderful gift of words and music.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for music, joy and laughter. Thank you for positive people that enrich our lives. Lord, please shake negative people out of their joyless stupor and set them on a course to you, where laughter and fun come easily. Help us enjoy the life you have given us, and may our hearts be warm with love instead of cold as ice. In Jesus’ name, amen.
