Treasurers

Back in the 1980’s, we occasionally caught a comedy special on TV by the comedian Gallagher.   He was famous for his watermelon smashing “Sledge-O-Matic”.  On one particular show he did this whole skit called, “IT’S ON SALE!”  It was very funny.  He did a great spoof on the fact that many of us buy things JUST because they are,” ON SALE!”  Well, it became quite a joke with my husband and I especially when we were shopping or when I came home from shopping and bought things, yep, ON SALE!

Many of us have more than enough material possessions, but I still find myself purchasing things to fix up my home or things I just want.  In the United States, it’s just what we do.  We have come so far from how our ancestors grew up without charge cards.  They all had a lot less but many still had a good life.  Our ancestors seemed to appreciate what they had a little more than we do in 2023.  What does the Bible say about stuff?

Mathew 6:19-20 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

The verse is saying don’t make our lives about the accumulation of material things.  Our lives should be about people who have an eternal souls created by God the Father.  So, layup treasures in heaven.  How do we do that?

Matthew 25:45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

We store up treasures by our acts of kindness and love.  By introducing people to the Lord Jesus so that those real treasures, people, will be with us in Heaven someday.

I don’t know about you but I’ve been thinking I need to re-evaluate my wants.  I have a feeling that the time is coming very soon when the high cost of wants and needs may help me make those decisions a lot easier.  Nevertheless, every day with lack or abundance we could easily store up treasures in Heaven.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the good life I have enjoyed.  Help me re-evaluate what I put my time and money into.  Help me see the truth about myself.  May I please you in all that I do.  Give me clear direction so I can walk the path you would have me to walk.  May I serve you the best way that I can. Give me opportunities to store up treasures in heaven.  Thank you, Lord, In Jesus’ name, amen.

God Bless

Sally
